This animated film draws inspiration from Buddhist tales from Dunhuang, with visuals reminiscent of Dunhuang mural art.
Young Jiazi, who has lived deep in the mountains since childhood, possesses a kind heart. Not only does he show great filial piety to his parents, but he also cares for the small animals in the forest as if they were family. One day, the king leads a hunting party into the mountains to hunt. Unable to bear seeing the peaceful forest disrupted, Jiazi quickly helps birds, squirrels, deer, and other animals escape. However, the king’s cavalry relentlessly pursues the deer herd. To protect them, Jiazi dons a deer hide and disguises himself as a doe, running in the opposite direction of the herd. The king shoots an arrow, striking Jiazi directly in the heart. After the king’s cavalry departs, Jiazi’s former companions gather around him, shedding sorrowful tears as they attempt to bring him back to life.
