Long, long ago, on the island of Taiwan, there lived an elderly woman named Osapu. Kind and loving, she had gone blind from years of hard labor. Despite this, the old woman still went up the mountain every day to work. The small animals in the mountains were very fond of her and would often help her pick mushrooms. Living next door to the old woman were two mischievous and heartless brothers who frequently roamed the mountains, frightening and harming small animals for fun, and even playing cruel tricks on old Osapu. Before long, the brothers injured a fawn's leg and subjected it to all kinds of abuse. When the old woman stepped in to stop them, she was met with mockery and bullying from the brothers, who even stole the coconuts from her coconut grove. Heartbroken, the old woman wept. Then, a mystical water deer appeared, claiming it would change the brothers' wicked ways.
The next day, the two brothers discovered a spring on the mountain. Little did they know that after drinking from it, one would become blind and the other lame. This time, the brothers were about to truly taste the suffering of living with disabilities...
