In 1920s Latvia, the beautiful and intelligent Anna falls in love with an entrepreneur, but life does not go as smoothly as expected. The Great Depression devastates their business, and Anna is confined to a cabin in the woods, raising eight children. The successive invasions by the Soviets and the Nazis make life increasingly difficult. Though resilient Anna weathers all these storms, she cannot overcome the battles within her own mind. With unique humorous narration paired with richly colored and imaginative animation, the director transforms the long-standing depression that has haunted her family and herself into a bizarre and vibrant visual feast.
