This is an artsy film funded by the National Film Board of Canada, a governmental agency that provides financial support to animators creating short films. Some of the films produced with their assistance are more commercially oriented, while others, like this one, lean toward the artistic and may not particularly appeal to the general public. OP HOP/HOP OP consists of 24 different geometric images scratched directly onto film (all in black and white), which appear and disappear in a rather random sequence. Each image produces a sound, and as they come and go, there is a popping noise—almost like little drums. It resembles something you might encounter in a modern art gallery. However, unfortunately, it is also quite a chore to watch, even though the film runs less than four minutes—it feels rather tedious. Additionally, and I say this seriously, I worry that the rapid flashing lights in the film could potentially trigger seizures in individuals with epilepsy.
