"Crocodile Street" is adapted from the short story of the same name by Polish writer Bruno Schulz, taking the blending of organic materials and mechanical objects even further. A man spits on the lens of an old projector, and the moldy machine springs to life, pulling the audience into a netherworld of dust and filth. Screws twist out of objects and move about on their own. Strange machines repeat futile tasks aimlessly, while a mischievous child shines light on inanimate objects, bringing them to life.
Throughout the film, the short draws heavily from the descriptions of Crocodile Street in the original work—rust, screws and light bulbs, eyeless plastic dolls, glass, and more—creating an atmosphere of loneliness, suspense, and decay, and shaping the image of a dilapidated, impoverished industrial city.
