In the Viking island nation, a young boy named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) is the son of the tribe's great chieftain Stoick the Vast (voiced by Gerard Butler). He longs to follow in his father's footsteps and slay dragons—the winged creatures that are the primary predators of the island's Viking sheep herds—but every time he appears in the tribe's dragon-fighting battles, he only ends up causing more trouble. During a confrontation with the dragons, Hiccup secretly uses a dragon launcher to injure the most mysterious "Night Fury" dragon. Behind his tribe's back, he releases, raises, and even tames the dragon, naming it "Toothless." Hiccup's mysterious behavior arouses the suspicion of Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera), a girl training alongside him in dragon-slaying techniques. Astrid discovers Hiccup's secret but is simultaneously awestruck by the exhilarating experience of riding Toothless through the skies. Hiccup decides to reveal the truth to Stoick—who has just returned from an expedition—and his tribesmen during the dragon-slaying coming-of-age ceremony, hoping to persuade everyone to abandon dragon hunting. However, his plan backfires, leading to Toothless being captured, and a greater disaster looms on the horizon.
