The adorable little boy Gerald is born into an ordinary family, but soon his parents discover a serious problem. Little Gerald never learns to speak—when he opens his mouth, all that comes out are "boing-boing" sound effects! Gerald's father quickly contacts a doctor, and after an examination, the doctor concludes that this is simply Gerald's unique way of speaking, with no cure available.
As he grows older, the variety of sounds from Gerald's mouth increases—train noises, car sounds, bird calls, even explosions—he can mimic anything. His mother has grown accustomed to it, but his father still struggles to accept this reality. On his first day of school, Gerald is sent back home, and the other children keep their distance. His father looks at him with impatience. Heartbroken, Gerald decides to run away from home, but one event changes his life forever...
