In a desolate and uninhabited suburb, by the clear and sparkling river, stands an old mill that has long been abandoned. Human footprints have long vanished from this place, and now it has become a joyful haven where animals dwell and thrive. Birds build their nests here, little mice scurry about happily, and countless bats hang upside down on the top floor of the mill, eagerly awaiting the arrival of night. As dusk falls, the lotus flowers close their pristine petals, while creatures active in the night—frogs, crickets, owls, and fireflies—begin to perform their nocturnal serenade in front of the old mill. Just then, a gentle breeze turns into a fierce gale, dark clouds obscure the moon's glow, angry lightning crackles across the sky, and a disastrous storm soon follows. It violently lashes against the crumbling old mill, and the small animals residing within also endure the baptism of the tempest...
This film won the 1938 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
