Suddenly, the wall clock strikes eight—the child's bedtime has arrived. Reluctantly, the little boy takes the kerosene lamp from his mother's hands and heads upstairs alone to sleep. The dark staircase feels like a long and terrifying journey to him, and the cold, endless night fills the boy with unease.
