In the film, the protagonist Manolo (voiced by Mexican actor Diego Luna) must defeat his rival Joaquin (voiced by Channing Tatum) to win the heart of his beloved Maria (voiced by Zoe Saldana). To achieve this, he not only has to surpass Manolo in swordsmanship and face Maria herself, a skilled fencer, but also journey through "The Land of the Remembered," resist various temptations, and return to the world of the living.
The movie is visually stunning, rich in color, and filled with Mexican cultural elements. Mexicans believe that death is the destination of life and the beginning of rebirth. The first two days of November are traditionally celebrated as the "Dia de Muertos" (Day of the Dead), a nationwide festival where people wear masks, parade through the streets, and enjoy bread and candies adorned with skull motifs. The colors, musical instruments, food, and even Manolo’s skull-inspired appearance in "The Land of the Remembered" draw inspiration from the customs of the "Dia de Muertos."
