A masterpiece of claymation stop-motion animation. Based on the connection between Mark Twain and Halley's Comet, it tells the fantastical adventure of Mark Twain and several children traveling by airship to visit the comet. Interspersed throughout are animated adaptations of several of Mark Twain's works:
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
The Mysterious Stranger
The Damned Human Race
The Diary of Adam and Eve (Letters from the Earth)
Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
These works themselves reflect Mark Twain's own experiences, and the animation further incorporates his real life, cleverly intertwining it with the main storyline. Suitable for all ages, it is humorous and rich with life philosophy. While learning about the master of American humorous literature, one can also appreciate the importance of literature in animation creation.
The claymation technique, a core strength of Will Vinton Studio, is showcased to its fullest in this film. Particularly stunning are the detailed facial expressions of the characters, the object transformation animations, and the intricate scene effects. From an old man's head to a mask-like face to a thousand-faced accordion, the animation brings to life plant growth out of nothing, along with white-capped water splashes, rippling currents, and waterfalls. Combined with sound effects and dialogue, it rivals the visual impact of modern CGI.
