A large and a small cormorant often stole fish from the fisherman's pond, greatly angering him. In response, the fisherman made a straw man and placed it in the pond. This trick worked effectively—the cormorants dared not enter the water to steal fish for several days. However, the fisherman's peace did not last long. The motionless straw man soon aroused the cormorants' suspicion. After playfully teasing the straw man, they resumed their brazen fish-stealing spree.
The fisherman devised another plan. He disguised himself as the straw man and stood in the pond. Unaware of the truth, the cormorants feasted to their fill and then began to play with the straw man as they had before. Throughout this ordeal, the fisherman endured the cormorants defecating on his head, splashing water, and even leech bites, all while remaining perfectly still. Finally, the two cormorants fell into the trap he had meticulously set.
