During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Tang Dynasty, scholar Tang Ao, disheartened by his failure in the imperial examinations, sinks into depression. At the invitation of his brother-in-law Lin Zhiyang, he joins a merchant fleet to travel overseas, journeying across the seas. He visits various countries with distinct customs—such as the Land of Gentlemen, the Land of Women, the Land of Giants, the Two-Faced Kingdom, the Kingdom of No Intestines, and the Kingdom of Pierced Chests—experiencing many thrilling and amusing adventures along the way.
