"Space Black Knight" is a 1979 animated film directed by Park Jong-hee and produced in South Korea. Yoon Soo-il, among others, participated in its production.
"Space Black Knight" (Uchū Kurokishi, Korean: 우주흑기사, English: Space Black Knight) is the name given to a pirated version of "Mobile Suit Gundam" that circulated in South Korea from the late 1970s to the 1990s. It refers to both the Space Black Knight and the protagonist of this work. It should be noted that during this era, the import of Japanese popular culture was banned in South Korea.
In North America, it was released under the title "Johnny Destiny Space Ninja" and won the Golden Halo Award from the South California Motion Picture Council.
A major characteristic of this work is its unauthorized plagiarism from "Mobile Suit Gundam." Not only the characters, but even the compositions and backgrounds bear strong resemblances in many aspects. Furthermore, the melody of the theme song was exactly the same as that of the Korean version of "Triton of the Sea." The theatrical version was released in an era when only the TV broadcast of "Mobile Suit Gundam" was available, prior to the release of its theatrical films in Japan (1981). This occurred because a South Korean company, which was a subcontractor for drawing Gundam, stole the settings. It is said that such practices were common at the time.
