"Iron Man No. 28" (Tetsujin 28-gou) is the fourth television anime adaptation of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's manga series "Iron Man No. 28," directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa. It aired on TV Tokyo and its affiliates from April 7 to September 29, 2004. It was later broadcast on BS Japan (in morning time slots) and Kids Station.
In the final stages of World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army was plagued by a critical shortage of soldiers. The solution conceived was the Iron Man Project, aimed at creating an invincible soldier—the "Iron Man." Dr. Kaneda, hailed as a genius scientist at the time, was selected for the project and developed the Iron Men at a secret army research facility in the South. However, the project faced significant difficulties. During this period, news arrived that Dr. Kaneda's son, Shotaro, had died in the Tokyo air raids. Overwhelmed by grief, Dr. Kaneda named the 28th unit "Shotaro" and meticulously crafted it as if it were his own child. Finally, the ultimate humanoid weapon, Iron Man No. 28, was completed—a machine with the potential to single-handedly reverse the Empire's劣势. But when the American forces launched an air raid on the secret research facility, Dr. Kaneda told Shikishima, "There are things in this world that should never have been born," before perishing alongside the Iron Man in the bombardment. After the war, when Shikishima was demobilized and returned to Japan, it was discovered that Kaneda Shotaro was, in fact, still alive.
Ten years later, Shikishima, now the president of Shikishima Heavy Industries and working tirelessly for Japan's reconstruction, was summoned by high-ranking government officials and informed that a massive shell had been fired from the South and was heading toward Japan. Meanwhile, Shotaro, who had grown into a boy detective, was pursuing the gangster Murasame family. He cornered them at the under-construction Tokyo Tower, but unfortunately, the mysterious shell landed there at that very moment. After being briefly knocked unconscious, Shotaro awoke to find Chief Otsuka and Dr. Shikishima arguing. As he approached them, the giant shell cracked open, revealing a giant version of himself—Iron Man No. 28, also named "Shotaro." From this point on, Shotaro gradually becomes entangled in battles against the shadows of war and those left behind by the times.
