This work was originally conceived as a 12-episode complete story, with director Takeyuki Kanda initially in charge. However, his health deteriorated during production, and the baton was passed to Manabu Iida from episode 7 onward. The story itself largely follows the plotline originally conceived by Kanda. Due to Kanda's sudden passing on July 27, 1996, Iida and the remaining staff completed up to episode 11 based on the notes and plots Kanda had left behind. Instead of a 12th episode, the special episode "Last Resort" was produced. This is why the work took on a somewhat unique form and why there was a gap of nearly a year before the release of episode 7. This work became Kanda's final creation.
