The anime is based on the true historical story of "Thirteen Warriors Returning to Yumen" from the Eastern Han Dynasty in China, originally recorded in the "Book of the Later Han: Biography of Geng Yan." It recounts the heroic tale of Geng Gong, the Eastern Han garrison commander, who led hundreds of Han soldiers in defending the frontier fortress of Shule City from the 18th year of the Yongping era to the 1st year of the Jianchu era (75–76 AD). Under prolonged siege and relentless attacks by tens of thousands of formidable enemies, with supplies exhausted and ammunition depleted, the soldiers dug through mountains to find water, boiled leather and ate bowstrings, and fought valiantly and tenaciously against foreign invaders, vowing never to retreat. The film is produced by Guangzhou Nineteen Animation Culture Co., Ltd., with Wang Jing as the producer and Gao Jie as the director.
